Business Etiquette

• Punctuality is very important. Leave plenty of extra time to allow for traffic delays. If you anticipate being late for a meeting, call ahead to apologize and let your associates know when you expect to arrive
• When arranging appointments, keep public holidays in mind. Some businesses close for a week around Chinese New Year, Labor Day and National Day
• Greet new business acquaintances with a handshake, and immediately swap business cards. Carry a business card holder. Always give and receive business cards using both hands. It is considered impolite to put cards directly into your pocket without reading them first
• Address business associates using their title and family name
• Business culture can be very formal. Men usually wear suits and ties, and women dress conservatively. Avoid wearing bright colors. During the summer, some businessmen wear a short-sleeved shirt without a jacket
• In a social situation with business associates, avoid controversial topics such as Taiwan, Tibet and religion
