Business Etiquette

• The three-day Thai New Year holiday falls in mid-April. Try to avoid business travel at this time
• Try to be punctual for appointments. Bad traffic is common, so allow for extra travel time. If you anticipate being late for a meeting, call ahead to apologize and let your associates know when you expect to arrive
• Thais dress formally and conservatively for business. Men usually wear suits and ties. Women should avoid sleeveless tops and skirts shorter than knee-length
• If you are invited to someone's home, bring a small gift from your home country. It is considered rude to unwrap a present in front of the giver
• Carry plenty of good-quality business cards with you. Exchange them with associates at the beginning of meetings
• It is very common for Thais to hold business meetings over lunch or dinner. Locals eat using a spoon and fork. Note that the fork is used to push food onto the spoon, not directly for eating. Chopsticks are only used for noodle soup
• When greeting business associates, follow the example of your host. He or she will offer either a handshake or a bow (wai) – rarely both
