
Leo M. van Wijk was born in Amsterdam in 1946.
After completing his secondary school education he studied at the University of Amsterdam. He was awarded a master's degree in econometrics in 1971.
Mr. Van Wijk joined KLM Royal Dutch Airlines on May 1, 1971. Between 1971 and 1977 he held various positions at Automation Services.
From 1977 to 1982 inclusive he worked at KLM's Cargo Division, where he was appointed Manager Cargo Handling in March 1979. At the start of 1983, he was appointed Manager Cargo Marketing and, at the same time, Deputy to the Vice President KLM Marketing.
His appointment as Vice President KLM Marketing followed on May 1, 1984.
On May 1, 1987, Mr. Van Wijk moved to a new position as Deputy to the Senior Vice President Commercial KLM Group. He was appointed Senior Vice President Corporate Development on January 1, 1989.
In January 1991, Mr. Van Wijk was appointed Managing Director of KLM. He served as President & Chief Executive Officer from August 6, 1997 through April 1, 2007.
Since May 5, 2004, Mr. Van Wijk has served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Air France KLM. Mr. Van Wijk is also Chairman of the Governing Board of SkyTeam, the airline alliance to which Air KLM and Air France belong.
Mr. Van Wijk is also a member of:

- The Supervisory Board of Aegon NV;
- The Supervisory Board of Randstad Holding NV;
- The Advisory Council of ABN AMRO Holding NV;
- The Supervisory Board of Kennemer Gasthuis;
- Chairman of the Board of Connekt.
